A New Phase
We met with the Neuro-oncology team friday for the results of Jacob's MRI - It was "stable" meaning, I guess, nothing's changed since the last one three months ago.
That means, now that he is off steroids, there isn't much to do medically for Jacob's radiation necrosis - the area of damage near his thalamus that is causing his double vision, weakness and loss of coordination and balance. It's time for us to leave the nest and stop looking to the doctors for answers.
It was a wrenching realization, and made for a very painful appointment, but after some time to get adjusted to the idea, it is also liberating. Jacob is really tired of appointments, tests, and medicines shaping his life.
The doctors did a heroic job saving Jacob's life. I am only now realizing how tiny his chances of survival were when he relapsed. To still have him with us nearly two years later is a miracle, and we appreciate it everyday.
